Lyrics

Sargasso Sea
Words & music by Fitz

Underneath a strange sky
The deck shimmers of green
I ration out more water
From a dented canteen

Looking all around, not a single sound
Except the gentle waves
Bobbing up and down in a burial ground
Of ships that lost their way

CALLING EVERY HOUR
ON EVERY FREQUENCY
ONLY TIME AND ME
IN MY SARGASSO SEA
WITH THE WAVES AND DEBRIS
IN MY SARGASSO SEA

Counting seagulls flying by
I’ve never felt so alone
Calling out to derelicts
Will I ever reach my home?

CHANNEL & CHORUS: REPEAT

Now night has fallen
And the weeds gather tight
Mist rolls in across my deck and
The moon goes out of sight

CHANNEL & CHORUS: REPEAT

(bridge)

CHANNEL & CHORUS:REPEAT

Notes

Andy Hamburger supplied the drums on this track and in retrospect I wish I’d called in Jay Ridgeway for the bass again. It would have grooved much better. I’ve wanted to write a song with this title forever but could never come up with lyrics. It was while I was in isolation on a farm for several months that they arrived. Perhaps it took isolation to write about it.

Originally the song had another verse with the following lyrics. I liked them but it made the track drag on too long:

Messages launched in bottles
Never work themselves free
They stay here with me
In my sargasso sea

Instrument-wise it was AAS’s Lounge Lizard for the piano and Chromaphone for the marimba, UHE’s Diva provided the Vangelis lead line, my Jupiter 8 the bass and horns, and Camel Audio’s Alchemy the strings.
