Mardi Gras! The legendary New Orleans festival of color, costumes, and revelry. I was luck enough to attend earlier this year had a fine time, in no small part thanks to Tanner of Tanner’s Gallery who put me up and gave me a local perspective on the event.
On the whole, it reminded me a lot of Burning Man. Yes, the iron railing-laced warrens of New Orleans are a far cry from the barren expanse that is the playa, but something about two experiences rhymed. The costumes? The drinking? The sexual tension? Maybe all the above. Perhaps it was the palpable sense of creativity and fringe culture in the air.
Mardi Gras can be a very commercial and “touristy” affair if you only stick to the main events and big parades. I recommend making time to hit some of the smaller events like the Society of Saint Anne parade which was probably the best time I had during the entire time.
