Turkey – Temple of Artemis

Temple of Artemis

Once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world the Temple of Artemis is now decidedly less wondrous. In fact, all that remains is one reconstructed pillar, one wall, and a scattering of ancient rubble. Despite this I found the site somehow very compelling to visit. It has a presence? Aura? It’s hard to put my finger on but there was something about the space that I was really drawn to.

Apparently it was also a draw to some local wildlife. Ducks used the wet area near the wall, a large friendly stray dog lived under a bush and came out to say hello with begging eyes to tourists and a female peacock showed up for, well, I’m not really sure why she was there but she took a pretty picture.

The temple is a short distance from Ephesus and you can take the whole thing in in about 10 minutes. If you’re visiting Ephesus it’s worth your time to stop in for a quick gander.
