About: I'm a singer/songwriter who uses lots of synths. My music kinda sounds like Thomas Dolby meets a National Geographic Special. It's great for your road trips, travels, or simple office escapes.

Cabin of Fervent Work

April 24th, 2012 by Fitz, Music Tips & other Gear, 0 Comments

Cabin Studio Setup

Toiling away on my full recording and since my cabin is going to be empty for a few weeks till the new roof is in place I’ve set up there for some distraction-free productivity.

Getting away to a cabin in the woods to finish a record is a time honored tradition. Bon Iver made news doing it. Tom Goss does it regularly (and used my cabin for his new record). And I’ve heard tales of big acts like Queen and Heart using a little sequester rustication to avoid distractions and quiet the mind so the songs can be heard.

Cabin Synths

For gear, I’m trying to go a bit minimal. The Prophet 08 and Jupiter 8 will handle 90% of the synth sounds with the ARP 2600 and Dotcom modular being recorded back at home. For vocals I’m sticking with the Sennheiser 421 MD with the highly recommended Stedman pop screen. Add in a Small Stone phaser pedal and that’s about it. Everything is running thru a Metric Halo 2882 and Ableton 8 is the DAW. Finally, I have an Apple Macbook pro with a UAD solo card in its ExpressCard slot powering it all (the UAD plugins are key to a lot of this album’s sound).
