Crazy Horse Memorial

Once completed the Crazy Horse Memorial will be the largest statue on the planet. It’s that first part that’s the problem: completed. They’ve been working on it since 1948 and, as you can see from the photos below, aren’t likely to finish it anytime in OUR lifetimes. Still, as under construction site it’s and interesting place to visit with an expansive information and cultural center.

The basic entry fee was about $10 and it allows you access to the cultural center but not to get any closer to the memorial. For whopping additional $125 you can take a bus tour up to the base of the mountain and if you’re really invested in seeing it up close you can take the $500 tour up to the actual construction site near statue’s head.

Needless to say, I embraced the distant-but-cheap $10 option. The $125 trip to the base seems a rip off but I can see doing the $500 tour just because someday the thing will be finished and you won’t be able to tour it as a construction site. That day, however, is most likely, a day long, long, long time from now, so I’m pretty sure I can come back to it later.
