Sun Studios

Sun Studio of Memphis Tennessee: a humble building that fostered titanic talents. Rightfully called the “birthplace of rock and roll” the list of early rock musicians who recorded at Sun is insane. A highly abbreviated list would include at least:

  • B.B. King
  • Carl Perkins
  • Charlie Rich
  • Elvis Presley
  • Howlin’ Wolf
  • Ike Turner
  • Johnny Cash
  • Junior Parker
  • Roy Orbison
  • Rufus Thomas

The place was shuttered in the early 1960 and remained vacant till 1985 when it was reopened and a flood of more modern artist took to the place. U2 scored huge with “Rattle and Hum” which was recorded in Sun and now the “who’s recorded here” list is filled with contemporary artists.

The studio remains in heavy use today with public tours during the day and recording at night. The recording area is small but has a great sound. High ceilings and sufficient baffling tame flutter echo but leave enough ambience for a nice large sound. Rates are a very reasonable $100 and hour which includes an engineer. The place is best suited for those seeking a live band sound as there isn’t much room for isolation. An act that can come in and just play their songs would probably love the vibe. Those seeking more high-tech studio solutions might want to record elsewhere.
