Mammy’s Cupboard

August 1st, 2011 by Fitz, Travel Adventures & Places, 0 Comments

Let’s face it: there’s something very compelling about old, GENTLY racist and bigoted art. I’m not talking the hardcore hateful stuff, but things like lawn jockey statues, sissy boys in movies, or vintage depictions of big-nosed Jews and buck-tooth Asians.

Or, a giant Aunt Jemima-shaped restaurant called “Mammy’s Cupboard”.

Mammys Cupboard

“Mammy” wears a white face now but I’ve heard in the past she had the black skin to match her moniker.

Oh, come on! Admit it! You can’t help but be simultaneously amused and horrified by this stuff. They’re a healthy wince-inducing reminder of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come.

Sadly Mammy’s was closed when I visited but she’s located in Natchez Mississippi if you want to go. She’s right on the highway so keep a sharp eye or you’ll zoom right by her.
