Walluka Springs: The Lagoon of the Creature of the Black Lagoon

Walluka Boat

Swimming in the cool, clear waters of Walluka Springs it’s easy to see why it was chosen as the filming location for the original Creature of the Black Lagoon and many early Tarzan movies. The place is drop dead gorgeous, teaming with wildlife, and yet so accessible it’s a perfect place to take the kids.

My couchsurfing hosts, Kim and Dina, pointed me towards the springs and I spent an entire day swimming in its fresh waters, hiking the nearby nature trails, and going for a very fun boat ride that allowed for surprisingly up and close encounters with all sorts of wildlife. For lunch I ate in the well appointed 30s-style Wakulla lodge.

The whole day I kept thinking “My brother should bring his little girls down here. They’d love this place.” It really is a perfect family attraction with lots to offer both parents and children. It has an old fashioned elegance and the spring itself is a geological wonder with gigantic underwater caves extending for more that 12 miles (make sure you read about it in the boat-rental building).
