As I shared with Facebook friends, I was standing on the dock a few days ago when I heard a “phfft” from below and turned to see a manatee swim right beneath me. By the time I got the camera on all I captured was its tail.
It was a cool, albeit a bit unsettling moment as the thing was BIG and swam right under me. I know they’re not dangerous but it’s like turning to see a cow suddenly standing right next to you. 1000+ pounds of anything in sudden close proximity is jarring.
This morning I went I went out to the dock there was a whole herd (pod?) of them playing around the dock. I believe there were 8, but it was a bit like trying to count noodles in a bowl of soup as someone stirs it.
