South Carolina’s South of the Border

There’s a certain type of commercial tackiness that Americans do better than anyone, and South Carolina’s South of the Border is a stunning example.

This day-glow tourist trap sits at the center of a web of hundreds of billboards that stretch for many miles in all directions. You can’t get anywhere near the Northern part of the state without seeing giant ads with Pedro (their mascot) enticing you with bad jokes to visit the destination.

When you arrive it’s rather like walking into one of those billboards. The overpowering colors and camp sensibility is everywhere. The place is downright cartoonish. And yet for all its kitsch, it’s still kinda charming. It’s so crass and so over the top that it somehow works. Not enough for me to stay the night, but definitely worth a stop and some photography.
